Is It Legal to Sell 3D Printed Miniatures? Licenses, Explained Like a Human
Short answer: selling the physical prints is legal when the file's license allows it — and completely up to the license, not to general copyright folklore. Here is the map.
The file license decides everything
When you buy or download an STL you are buying a license, not ownership. Licenses come in three broad flavors:
- Personal use only — print for yourself; selling prints breaches the license. Most free files on Thingiverse/Printables (CC-BY-NC) live here.
- Commercial / merchant tiers — many Patreon sculptors sell a separate monthly "merchant" subscription that permits selling prints, often capped or geo-limited.
- Commercial included — the purchase itself grants print-and-sell rights. That is how our catalog works: every mini, from a $4 bandit to the full warband packs, includes selling your physical prints with no royalties, unit caps or extra tier. The one-page version is on our license page.
What no license ever allows
Reselling or sharing the digital file itself. The distinction is physical vs digital: your prints are yours; the STL stays the sculptor's.
The fan-art asterisk
Files depicting trademarked characters (Warhammer proxies, Disney, big anime IPs) carry risk regardless of what the file seller claims — a file license cannot grant trademark rights the seller does not own. Original fantasy designs — orcs, bandits, minotaurs, monsters — are the safe lane for commercial printing, which is why our commercial line is built on them.
Practical checklist before you sell
- Read the license page of every file you print for sale; save a copy.
- Prefer "commercial included" or documented merchant tiers.
- Avoid trademarked characters for anything you sell publicly.
- Credit the sculptor where the license asks for it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell a 3D print of a file I bought?
Only if the file's license permits it. "Personal use" licenses forbid selling prints; commercial or merchant licenses allow it. The purchase alone does not grant selling rights.
Can I sell prints of free STL files?
Usually not — most free files are licensed CC-BY-NC (non-commercial). Check each file; some creators do allow commercial use with attribution.
Do I need a license to sell 3D printed miniatures on Etsy?
You need the file's license to permit commercial printing. Etsy itself does not check, but rights holders do issue takedowns, and repeated strikes close shops.
Is it legal to sell 3D printed miniatures of copyrighted characters?
Selling prints of trademarked characters is infringement risk even if you modeled it yourself. Original designs with a commercial license are the safe route.
