How to Print Large Terrain and Dioramas on a Normal Printer
Terrain plays by different rules than figures: it's big, it's handled roughly, and nobody inspects its layer lines from 10cm away. That combination changes every setting.
FDM is the terrain machine
A building that would drink $15 of resin prints in $2 of PLA, survives being dropped in a bag, and its layer lines read as wood grain and stone courses once painted. Print structures at 0.2mm layers with 2 walls and 8-10% infill — stiffness comes from the shell, not the fill. Our haunted house at tabletop scale is an overnight print at these settings.
Orientation beats supports
Buildings almost always print best flat on their base, exactly as sculpted — the walls become vertical surfaces that need zero support. The support work concentrates in porch roofs, window sills and door lintels: tree supports on those, nothing else. A diorama with a sculpted ground base gives you a free raft; don't add another.
When it doesn't fit the plate
Split in your slicer's cut tool along natural seams — floor lines, rooflines, where a chimney meets a wall — never through a decorated face. Add 2-3mm alignment pins in the cut faces if your slicer supports it, or just key the joint with a shallow step. Glue with medium CA or plastic cement, clamp with painter's tape, and hide the seam under weathering: a dry-brushed "dirt line" along a floor seam looks intentional.
Scale trick for scenery
Terrain doesn't need the precision figures do — a door just has to read taller than a 32mm mini. Printing scenery at 90% saves a quarter of the material and nobody at the table will ever know. For the full percentage math, see the scaling guide.
